Accomack County voters to decide how school leaders are chosen

One of the big questions on the ballot today in Accomack County is what to do with the school board.
Right now the board is appointed by the general assembly but voters could change that.
Residents have the option of voting to have their entire school board elected instead.
A group of organizers collected almost 5,000 signatures to get the matter on the ballot.
47 ABC went to three polling sites today and asked how folks planned to vote.
It seems people were pretty split on the issue. Connie Buford says she is tired of the status quo and its time for a change.
"There's no accountability for issues here and we need different representation. And its kind of when you're here. Once you get on the board you're on the board."
Keith Wharton says things are working fine and there's no need fix anything.
"They should not be elected. I put no as well. I'm just like her with the no. I think we should do it the way we've been doing it."
Critics of the change say if board members have to be elected it might disenfranchise minorities and keep them out of the decision-making process.
While supporters say that everyone is being short-changed because the public doesn't get to choose who represents them.
