Police: Over $73k worth of untaxed cigarettes seized in Georgetown traffic stop; one charged

A man is facing multiple charges, after authorities say they confiscated approximately $73,370 worth of untaxed cigarettes during a traffic stop, in Georgetown.

The Georgetown Police Department says on Saturday, around 11:00 AM, officers pulled over a gray Ford Explorer traveling northbound, on Dupont Boulevard, for a traffic violation, in Georgetown. During the traffic stop, officers  says they conducted a consensual search of the vehicle. According to the report, a search revealed several bags containing cigarettes throughout the vehicle. Police report that a total of 5,060 packs of cigarettes of miscellaneous brands were found in the vehicle.

According to law enforcement, the total current street value in New York of the cigarettes confiscated is approximately $73,370.

Forty-four-year-old Tanvir Rafi, of Yorktown,VA, was arrested and charged with four counts of possession of untaxed tobacco products and one count of attempting to evade of defeat tax. Rafi was later released on a $6,400 unsecured bond.
