Keep Moving: Benefits of being active

According to the U.S. Census Bureau  almost 15% of Maryland's population is over the age of 65.

Experts say as we age our risk of falling increases but there's something we can all do to prevent that from happening.

Getting off the couch and moving around has been shown to have so many benefits including maintaining balance, which helps to prevent falls and stimulates brain activity.

The MAC Center for Aging right here in Salisbury has several programs aimed at keeping seniors healthy.

One on-site trainer says getting in gear is the best way to ensure your quality of life as you age.

"A lot of things happen to our bodies. Things atrophy so its important that they continue to maintain their mobility. Ankle mobility is a big thing so they can decrease the risk of falling. The other part is to maintain strength, muscular endurance and flexibility."

Experts say engaging in physical activities also has several social benefits as well and works to keep seniors connected to their communities.

Anyone looking to sign up  for activities at the MAC Center for Aging can call 410-742-0505.
