How to communicate with kids during tragedies

An important question is being raised following the tragic Las Vegas shooting: how do parents communicate with their children about tragic events in our country?

No matter what, our kids will hear about tragedies whether it be through social media, talking to other kids on the playground, or even just passing by a tv screen.

That's why Tanya Sharpe, a Professor at the University of Maryland, said it is important to be open with your children about hard news topics and to provide them with the right information. Sharpe said, "Keep the lines of communication open. And that means being readily available to talk to students or to kids about what they're experiencing, what they're seeing, and sort of field any questions that come up for them."

Even if your child does not initiate a conversation with you, if they display any signs of insecurity, discomfort, or not feeling safe, Sharpe said you should start a conversation with them.
