Monday marked the second annual Dog Days of Summer 5k hosted by the Rylie Smiles Foundation.

Race organizers said this year’s 5k attracted 30 percent more people than last year.

The goal of the 5k was to fundraise for the Rylie Smiles Foundation.

That foundation provides iPods to sick children in need in hospitals.

The foundation was inspired by 11-year-old Rylie Maedler, who had extremely rare bone tumors in her face and palate.

The 5k provided refreshments, food, and a close proximity to the ocean to participants.

Rylie’s mom, Janie Maedler, is already encouraging people to make it out to next year’s Dog Days of Summer 5k.

Janie said, “Next year we’re having our 5k same day, same place. If you’ve got your 2018 calendar, go ahead and mark it down for Labor Day and we look forward to seeing everyone on Labor Day!”

Janie said Rylie was happy with Monday’s turnout and is hoping for an even bigger crowd next year.
