New fitness trend hits Cambridge

Buddha Bootcamp

A national fitness trend has finally made its way to Delmarva!

On Labor Day, a local business in Cambridge debuted their first “Big Buddha” classes on the water.

Let it go and let it flow is the mantra of the latest fitness craze in Delmarva.

Kristen Murphy, the Flow Motion Fit Program Director, said, “But that’s the really really cool thing about it is that you learn to adjust and your body catches on really super fast, so I love it for cross training.”

Imagine balancing on a paddle board, but without the paddle, and then add yoga. That is essentially what this new trend is like.

Instructors believe the new fitness trend will draw a lot more people out to the quiet town of Cambridge.

Murphy said, “Her class is sold out, you know, in record time! She had three back to back sold out no problem, so I don’t know, we’re just humming here!”

Angela Thomas, the Instructor of the Big Buddha classes, said, “I  think people that are vacationing here will definitely stop by and do some fitness with us, and we have a lot of people that just come through to go to Ocean City and now that they know that this is here, I think it’s a plus for the area.”

Two of Labor Day’s classes featured yoga classes. “The yoga, everyone came back in dry, but you’re using muscles you don’t normally use and on the water, it makes it a lot harder to stabilize and it’s fun, it’s beautiful out here today, who wouldn’t want to do this?” Thomas said.

A special bootcamp class was also featured. Thomas said, “We have rockstars this morning. We have little rockstars. Everybody’s doing really good so I’m excited to see what the bootcamp brings. Excited if we get anyone a little wet after the class.”

Participants of the bootcamp did get wet, and they said the class was tough. Mo Vancurin and Ren Beottger, participants of the bootcamp class, said, “It was harder than her normal classes at the gym. The standing up part was whew! It was just fun being out on the water and it was a beautiful day.”

Keeping your balance is tough on the boards, but the classes are fun and are based in a beautiful location.

Thomas said, “We have this beautiful venue at Sail Winds so it makes it just the perfect spot to incorporate the two together and get people out on the water.”

Monday’s participants encouraged others who might be curious to come out and try the classes for themselves.

Vancurin and Beottger said, “Angela is awesome so everybody should come and try it, it’s super fun. Yeah, I think everyone should try it at least once.”

Instructors told 47ABC that a special boards were created for these classes, they are two inches thicker than other boards in the nation.

The say the increased width helps increase balance and stability, and it is less harsh on your joints.

The boards are made locally by a company called Flow Motion in Ocean City.
