Maryland warns consumers of charity scammers

Across the eastern shore people are continuing their efforts to help those affected by Hurricane Harvey, but Maryland's Attorney General wants people to be mindful that there are scams going on.

The state's Attorney General's office recommends researching the charity first, to make sure they are a legitimate charitable organization.

It's also advised to check where exactly you're money will be going. They say, unfortunately scams are common after natural disasters hit.

Christine Tobar, of the MD Attorney General's office, says, "In the wake of unfortunate situations a natural disaster or the holiday season and its when people tend to open up their pockets and be more generous is also when scammers realize its a prime time to take action to try and get people's money."
