Worcester County Public Schools hold opening kick-off

Worcester County Public Schools hosted an opening kick-off on Tuesday morning at the Ocean City Convention Center.

According to officials, the event was at the Performing Arts Center in the Ocean City Convention Center. Employees were told to report to the center for the Back to School kick-off that featured several speakers who gave their thanks and best wishes to staff for a successful school year.

Speakers and performers included Superintendent of Schools Lou Taylor, keynote speaker Principal Baruti Kafele, the all County Chorus and a Countywide J.R.O.T.C Color-Guard National Anthem, and Chief Academic Officer Dr. John Quinn.

Officials say that Superintendent Taylor went on stage dancing with a few students to emphasize that staff should some times push themselves beyond their comfort zones to reach new levels of success.

He said, "I challenge you to do the things above and beyond your teaching talents this year for our kids. Love them. Encourage them. Embrace them. I challenge you to take a step forward and be a game changer.

Step out of your comfort zone like I stepped out of mine this morning by dancing in front of you…I did it because I want to tell you sometimes we have to take chances to make a difference." He also said that all staff members play a role in helping students feel supported.

Keynote speaker, Principal Kafele discussed how staff should have a passionate "nothing will stop me" attitude because anything can be achieved if that attitude is maintained.

Worcester County Schools begin on Tuesday, September 5.
