Wicomico Sheriff recounts his experience in Charlottesville

The riots in Charlottesville, Virginia may have been two weeks ago but it's impact is still being felt in the community.

Wicomico County Sheriff Mike Lewis is down there for training and weighed in on the matter, relaying the sights he saw of a community trying to heal.

On his Facebook page, Sheriff Lewis shared pictures of memorials set up for Heather Heyer, the young woman who lost her life when a man plowed through a crowd of counter-protesters.

47 ABC was able to speak with him earlier about what he's seen and the effect it's had on him.

"As you can imagine it's very emotional, it really is. You think about both sides of the issue. Are they right? Are they wrong? You think about the issue of the removal of these statues, it's systematic of something much larger that is taking place in this country right now. I'll tell you it's very troubling," says Sheriff Lewis.

Sheriff Lewis also remarked that on Thursday Circuit Court Judge Richard Moore will make a decision on the future of the General Robert E Lee statue that was at center of those protests.

He wrote, 'Let's pray that this judge has the courage and wisdom to make the right decision."
