Maryland Natural Resources officials have found the body of a swimmer who was trying to rescue some kayakers in distress. The incident happened Sunday night at Cedar Hill Park.

The victim's name is not being released because authorities are still working to notify his wife, who lives in a rural area of Mexico. They have said that the 46-year-old is a Salisbury man.

Investigators say he was swimming with a group of friends when he noticed a pair of kayakers in distress. Authorities say the man was trying to do the right thing when he disappeared in the water.

"The victim and another individual attempted to swim to them to render assistance. The one individual turned around when he realized how far away it was and deep the water was and this individual, the victim, went under the water and did not resurface," says Captain Brian Albert, MD Natural Resources Police.

Search and rescue efforts were called off Sunday night, but crews began the recovery effort Monday morning. The victim's body was found around 1PM in the Nanticoke River.

Back in June, a 14-year-old boy drowned in the same river at the Seaford Boat Ramp.
