Runners raise funds for Ballard Memorial

A race aimed at raising money in honor of a fallen Delaware State Trooper drew 200 runners in Georgetown Sunday morning.

The runners showed up to pay their respects, honor, raise money and, of course, race in the name of fallen Delaware trooper Stephen Ballard.

The money raised will go toward the Stephen Ballard Memorial Fund and the DSTA Benevolent Fund.

Event organizers say they were close to Ballard and thought the event would be a great way to honor Ballard's life and legacy.

One organizer says her husband worked with Ballard, saying the fallen trooper loved helping people.

"There's a story floating around about how he pulled a guy over on the side of the road and the guy's car had broken down.  And he needed $800 to fix it, and Stephen went and paid that bill because that's just the type of person that he was.  So that's why we wanted to do this for his family," said Morgan Albert.

Anyone with questions on how to donate to the Stephen Ballard Memorial Fund and the DSTA Benevolent Fund is encouraged to call the Delaware State Troopers Association at 302.736.9958.
