Pedestrian Safety Creating Worry

On the road, safety is not only important behind the wheel, but in the crosswalks. With reports of pedestrians being struck, many agencies around the area are taking concern.
Recently, not only in Maryland, but all across in Delmarva these numbers setting a trend. In 2016, 107 pedestrians were killed and over 3,000 were injured in the state of Maryland.The numbers for Delaware were not directly available.
But. with students returning to schools and colleges in the next few weeks, The Dover City Police Department releasing a guide for back to school safety, advising drivers to be aware of the increased foot traffic on the street. The Maryland State Highway Administration, also echoes that message.
"Basically it means watching, staying alert, avoiding distractions, really listening to the environment– so removing earphones, if you're walking use crosswalks, that where drivers expect to encounter," says Lora Rakowsi, Public Information Officer for the MSHA.
The State Highway Administration says that every year, they visit schools and colleges to help raise awareness for pedestrian safety to cut down on the number of these accidents, which they say has been helping.
