One dead after fatal tractor trailer crash in Laurel

Police are investigating a fatal vehicle crash involving a tractor trailer, in Laurel, after a woman died, on Tuesday.

Delaware State Police say on Tuesday, around 8:12 PM, 60-year-old Carman Williams, of Philadelphia, was driving a 2006 Buick Lucerne westbound on Gordy Road, in Laurel, where she stopped at a stop sign at the intersection of Sussex Highway (US 13). Troopers report that a 62-year-old man, of Nelsonia, VA, was driving a 2011 Kenworth T660 bobtail tractor northbound on Sussex Highway, approaching Gordy Road.

According to the report, Williams did not remain stopped at the stop sign, and entered the intersection directly into the path of the tractor trailer. Authorities say in an attempt to avoid the collision, the driver of the tractor trailer swerved to the left which caused the front of the tractor trailer to hit the driver's side of the Buick Lucerne. The Buick then reportedly redirected northbound and slid into the grass median before stopping. DSP reports that the tractor trailer swerved into the southbound lanes, crossing the center median before coming to a stop on the southbound shoulder of U.S. 13.

According to officials, Williams, who was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, was transported to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, in Seaford, where she was later pronounced dead. Troopers say that Williams' grandchildren, a 25-year-old male passenger and a 17-year-old female passenger, were also properly restrained and transported to the same hospital, where they were treated for non life -threatening injuries and released.

The 62-year-old driver of the tractor trailer was apparently wearing a seatbelt and reported no injuries at the scene.

This crash remains under investigation by the DSP Collision Reconstruction Team. Officials say that U.S. 13 northbound and southbound at Gordy Road were closed for four hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
