National Guard called to Texas to aid recovery efforts

The Delaware National guard is answering the call for help in Texas following the damage and flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey.

The National Guard Bureau asked Delaware to send a C-130 aircraft to help with evacuations and troops to help operate the Guard's Bureau Center.

We're told Delaware has men and material on standby, including four C-130 aircraft, and 14 Blackhawk helicopters that can be used for medical evacuation or transport, as well as a list of hundreds of soldiers and airmen who have volunteered to make the trip.

This isn't the first time the Delaware Guard has been called out after a national disaster.  They responded to Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and Hurricane Gustav in 2008.

The guard says they are ready to respond no matter what the call for help is, whether domestic or abroad.

"We have communications experts, engineers, medical, we have security, equipment maintenance, we have transportation.  So we have all the elements that are required for homeland support and they're embedded in the Delaware National Guard," said Lt. Col. Len Gratteri.

The Delaware National Guard says they've been told  the estimated recovery efforts in Texas will last between 30 and 60 days.
