Indian River school property tax change in Sussex County

A local school district is clarifying a change in school property tax, in Sussex County.

In response to citizens calls about increases in school property tax bills for fiscal year 2018, the Indian River School District says part of the tax increase stems for the public's approval of a current expense vote on March 2; the remaining tax increase is a result of the Delaware General Assembly balancing the state budget in July.

According to the report, the General Assembly reduced the annual senior property tax discount form $500 to $400 for residents ages 65 and over. Officials say this accounts for the additional $100 that some residents have noticed on their property tax bill.

The school district says that they did not have any input or influence on the legislature's decision to reduce the Senior Property Tax Discount.
