Event offers kids fun and learning

Families spending the day in Ocean City were able to attend an event aimed at giving local kids exposure to a wide range of topics including rocket launching and wildlife.

Children's Day on the Bay was held at Sunset Park as part of Week of the Child on Delmarva.

Christine Okerblom, the assistant curator, says the event is meant to be fun and peak the educational interests of kids.

"They have a lot of fun.  They get to engage one another, our educators here, and they get to learn about a wide range of topics."

Okerblom went on to say Week of the Child offers families and kids educational programs that can engage them in becoming familiar with local educational resources such as libraries, museums and local state parks.

Angela Ortt brought her two children to Sunset Park, and says the wide range of topics are perfect for her kids.

"It's just something different.  It's fun going to different local events in the area, and these guys love nature, and outdoors, and wildlife, reptiles and animals."

Participants included the Salisbury Zoo, who brought in some reptiles of their own, NASA, who showed kids how to launch a mini rocket, and live birds of prey from the Maryland State Parks, among other fun exhibits.

"This is just a fun event that is free and it engages the whole the family," said Okerblom.

The event started seven years ago for the Museums of Worcester County's Week of the Child, which focused on small museums and youth in the area.
