Delaware Tech creates correctional officer program

Thursday Delaware Technical Community College announced a new program aimed at certifying correctional officers.

Del Tech tells 47 ABC that the college worked with the First State's Department of Correction to develop the Correctional Officer Certificate Program.

The program focuses on interviewing, counseling, crisis intervention and criminal justice.

While the certificate is not mandatory for Delaware CO's John Painter, Del Tech's Public Relations Manager, says applicants who complete the program will receive priority employment consideration.

"The program was created after a discussion between the two agencies as a way to bolster the pool of applicants for the department of corrections side, and also kind of present opportunity to individuals who want to jump start a college degree," Painter says.

The program will be available starting this fall.
