Sussex Co. EMS celebrates opening of new station

When it comes to responding to emergencies, every minute matters.
Sussex County paramedic's know this which is why they celebrated the completion of a new EMS station.
The new facility on Plantation Road in Lewes has multiple vehicle driveways, a fitness area, and plenty of space to train new paramedics.
"It is a 5,000 thousand square foot facility, and cost about 1.4 million dollars to build, " says Robert Stewart, the Director for Sussex County EMS.
This new location has replaced the one off Route 1. Although these stations are only less than a mile away, EMS officials say this new location will make a difference when it comes to response time.
"Traffic on route 1 has not decreased, as everyone knows, its has continuously increased over the years," says Stewart.
Last year this station responded to more than 2,600 calls.
"We wanted to find a location that we could navigate more quickly, then what we were currently performing," says Stewart.
Now this is not the only EMS station that will be changing in Sussex County. County officials tell 47 ABC that they plan on transitioning all of their medic station in the coming years. The goal is for each unit to be housed independently and have more space for staff and equipment.
