Perdue announces animal welfare policies

Perdue Farms announced animal care improvements Monday, and it's getting a lot of praise from animal rights groups.
The details are outlined in the company's first annual report on progress, since its 2016 commitment to advancements in animal care.
Some of the improvements include giving chickens more space and light during the day, researching breeds with better welfare and having third-party monitoring of processing facilities.
47 ABC spoke with Brent Cox, of Mercy for Animals, who says Perdue's new standards are considerably better than other top poultry producers like Tyson.
"The fact that Perdue stepped forward and committed to being the supplier for any company that makes these higher welfare commitments, that's remarkably important," Cox said.
Cox says Perdue's commitment meets a demand from the food industry, as restaurants become more conscious of where their food is coming from.
