Morris Mill Dam project to cause traffic delays

A major project could soon be heading to Fruitland as early as this fall.  Wednesday evening at the Wicomico Youth and Civic Center, citizens were given the rundown on a potential project that may be closing main roads in the town for almost a year.

The estimated $1.4 million project will be at the site of the Morris Mill Dam on South Division Street.  The construction will center around replacing metal pipes with concrete pipes that will prevent future dam failures, as well as adding a gate the control the level of water in the pond.

Detours will be in place to take traffic out onto Route 13, either using Cedar Lane in Fruitland, or using Milford Street and College Avenue in Salisbury.

The project is scheduled to run for 9-12 months.  The biggest concern amongst residents that attended the public hearing — traffic.

"There will be some adjustments, we've talked to the Board of Education, we've talked with the Town of Fruitland Fire Department, everyone's on board, understands the work going on," said Dallas Baker, Director of Public Works for Wicomico County.

If anyone has questions or comments, they are asked to go to the Board of Public Works on www.wicomicocounty.org.
