THE HALO GARDEN COMMUNITY PROJECT

Recently, the Maryland Food Bank received a $15,000 Monsanto Fund Grant to support the Farm to Food Bank Program.  Most of you are aware of the high percentage of food insecure families there are in our area.  As you might suspect, that situation worsens for children who are dependent on the free meals they receive during the school year and the strain on local food banks increases.  In 2011, this station partnered with CFES and the Rotary Club of Salisbury to build the HALO garden, the first of many community gardens now in our city.  Many others were asked to donate, and they did.  Six years later, that garden continues to flourish and produce food to supplement the needs of the HALO café located on the same property.  It is located behind the ACME on route 13.  Under the continued guidance of Rotarian Jock McNair it produces the freshest food possible for our area’s homeless.  To date this year, that garden has yielded 418 pounds of produce and Jock’s team is preparing to replant some beds for a second crop.  Why do we do it?  Because local matters!
