Local firefighter talks dangers of overheating in hot cars

With the weather really heating up these past couple days, it's important to remember how dangerous it can be to leave children and pets in the car, even if its just for a couple minutes.

Salisbury Fire Capt. James Jester tells 47 ABC that this heat is extremely dangerous.

Each year although it's highly advertised to never leave a child or pet unattended in a hot car it still happens because folks don't realize just how quickly it can become a serious health risk.

"It happens in a matter of minutes, it doesn't take 20 or 30 minutes, it's a matter of a couple of minutes and that car will get well over a 100 degrees and then once you stop sweating, you go from a heat related illness to heat stroke, where you're probably looking at not a good outcome when its all said and done," explains Capt. Jester.

Jester adds with pets, their fur coat don't have the same heat release as humans, panting instead of sweating, but can still suffer from heat exhaustion.
