Fourth of July weekend sees historic travel volumes

AAA says Fourth of July is the most traveled holiday during the summer months and this year is no different.

2017 is seeing historic travel volumes.

Nationwide, about 44 million travelers are hitting the road.

For Maryland, AAA is projecting over 900,000 Marylanders are traveling this Independence Day holiday weekend.

This is 2.9 percent increase compared to 2016.

AAA suggests for all those traveling Friday to head out after 10 p.m. to avoid traffic.

Some of the reasons this year is seeing the biggest hike in travel rates is due to most kids are out of school and parents can take more vacations.

Another factor is a record low in gas prices. In Marylandthe average is at $2.21, which is the lowest we've seen all year.

AAA also says that Fourth of July hasn't fallen on a Tuesday in 11 years, pushing travelers to take that vacation.

Their biggest tip for this travel weekend is to be road ready and to make sure to check your tires before hitting the road.
