Delmarva opens cooling centers for heat

Officials say that a cooling center will be opened at the Wicomico County Civic Center on Thursday and Friday.

The Civic Center will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on 500 Glen Avenue, Salisbury, MD 21804. Residents will have to bring their own food, beverages and medications. No pets are allowed.

Anyone who needs a ride to the Civic Center should call Shore Transit at 443-260-2300 and select the dispatch option.

The MAC Inc. Senior Center will also be open on Thursday and Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. as a cooling center for residents ages 55 and over. MAC is on 909 Progress Circle, Salisbury, MD 21804.

The Somerset County Health Department has also announced areas where people can go to escape the heat on Wednesday.

Officials say that people can stop by the Crisfield Library on 100 Collins Street, Crisfield, MD 21817 from 10:00 a.m until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday and from 10:00 am until 5:00 p.m. on Friday, the Woodrow Wilson Community Center on 119 South Seventh Street, Crisfield, MD 21817 from 7:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. or the Somerset County Central Library on 11767 Beechwood Street, Princess Anne, MD 21853 from 10:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday and 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Friday.

People over 55 years old can go to the MAC Center, 8928 Sign Post Road, Westover, MD 21871 from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Thursday.

Officials say that none of these places are pet friendly.

Residents are told to take their own food, drinks and medications to the cooling centers. The Somerset County Emergency Management and the Somerset County Health Department recommend that area residents take the heat seriously and take appropriate steps to stay safe.

Residents are also urged to drink more fluids, but stay away from alcohol and high sugar drinks. When going out, officials say that people should never leave anyone, especially infants or young children, or animals in a closed, parked car for even a few minutes.

Worcester County officials say that there are currently no cooling centers open on Tuesday.

According to officials, although there are no cooling centers available in the County, people are encouraged to visit the Worcester County Snow Hill Branch Library, 307 North Washington Street, Snow Hill, MD 21863 (9:00 a.m until 7:00 p.m.,) the Worcester County Library – Pocomoke Branch, 301 Market Street, Pocomoke City, MD 21851 (9:00 a.m until 6:00 p.m.,) the Worcester County Library — Ocean Pines Branch, 11197 Cathell Road, Berlin, MD 21811 (10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.), the Worcester County Library, 10003 Coastal Highway, Ocean City, MD 21842 (10:00 a.m until 6:00 p.m.) and the Recreation Center, 6030 Public Landing Road, Snow Hill, MD 21863 (6:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m.), to escape the heat.

Officials say that these places are not pet friendly.

Talbot County officials say that those who want to escape the heat can go to local libraries in the County.

According to officials, residents can go to the Talbot County Free Library at West Dover Street in Easton, MD 21601 to escape the heat, or they can go to the St. Michael's Branch Library on 106 Fremont Street, St. Michaels, MD 21663. Both of the libraries are open from 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.

Citizens are also encouraged to go to the Talbot Senior Center on 400 Brookletts Avenue, Easton, MD 21601 to escape the heat.

Officials say that these places are not pet friendly.
