World War II vet honored to kickoff Memorial Day weekend

The official observance of Memorial Day is Monday, but the honors started rolling out Friday.

The National Association for Black Veterans recognized a World War II veteran in Dover to kick off the holiday weekend.

Layman Jackson, a member of the Nanticoke nation, was drafted and served in the navy in 1945-46.

Governor Carney, Senator Carper, Dover Mayor Robin Christiansen among others were at the event at Victory Church.

"And make sure that we build on the progress that we've made.  This has been an important engine for tourism on the eastern shore and throughout the bay watershed," said Carney.

The mission of the National Association for Black Veterans is to provide administrative assistance to all vets, their spouses and children.
