Preparing for hurricane season

The Maryland Insurance Agency is using Hurricane Preparedness Week to remind homeowners in Maryland to be prepared to take action in the case that a severe storm hits the region.
"You've heard the cliché 'prepare for the worst and hope for the best' and I think hurricane season sums that up pretty well. Better to error on the side of caution and be prepared," said Maryland Insurance Commissioner Al Redmer, Jr.
The first step to take is to try to prevent damage by bringing anything outside of the home inside. In the case of flooding, move your vehicle to higher ground.
If you already have damage, avoid additional damage, such as covering up a blown in window.
In the case that you need to file a claim, Redmer says to do a thorough inventory of your home. He says with camera phones today, it can be as easy as videotaping your home.
"Literally walk through your home and take a video of everything you own, so that in the unfortunate event you have a claim later you can easily recall the property that you had to document the property that you lost."
For personal safety, identify your nearest storm shelter and plan out an evacuation route. Have a storm survival kit that includes bottled water, a first aid kit, flashlights, a battery-operated radio, at least three days of non-perishable food items, blankets, clothing, prescription drugs, eyeglasses and personal hygiene supplies.
If you must evacuate your home, turn off all utilities and disconnect appliances to reduce the chance of additional damage and electrical shock when utilities are restored.
