Ocean Pines Police Dept. giving away free bike helmets to kids

Free Helmets

Head injuries and falls from bicycles are one of the leading causes of emergency room visits among children especially during the summer months on Delmarva.

That's why the Ocean Pines Police Department is giving away free bike helmets to kids for National Bike Safety Month.

Parents can bring their kids to the station to pick one up. They have different sizes and different colors for both boys and girls.

The Ocean Pines Police Department says as the weather warms up more kids will be on the roads biking across Delmarva.

That's why they're also warning drivers to be on the lookout.

"That extra five miles down below a speed limit when you're coming up on a bicyclist or pedestrian means all the difference in the world in what injury could occur if there was an accident," said Lt. Leo Ehrisman.

Helmets are required by law for anyone under 16, but all bicyclists regardless of age should help protect themselves by wearing properly fitted bicycle helmets every time they ride.
