Heavy Rain & Thunderstorms Friday

After a pleasant couple of days across Delmarva, a soaking rain is in store for Friday. A low pressure system sitting over the southeast will make its way north today. This system has brought severe flooding to portions of Missouri and Arkansas.

Although we are not expecting severe flooding, heavy rain is likely across the peninsula. The first batch of showers will arrive late Thursday night, ahead of warm front. Steadier rain will develop for Friday morning with even a few strong thunderstorms. The timing for the heaviest rain seems to be during the late morning and early afternoon hours.

Most locations should expect to see around an inch of rain, but higher totals are possible in thunderstorms. Here’s a look at a few model outputs for rain totals.

In addition to the heavy rain, the Storm Prediction Center has places us under a “marginal” risk for severe thunderstorms. The greatest risk factors for these storms appear to be strong winds and small hail.

The good news is that the rain will end by late afternoon, leading to a mainly dry Friday night with a few lingering showers.
