Future of Barren Creek Road

Monday morning, Wicomico County officials voted unanimously to purchase a piece of land in an effort to reduce flooding.

Barren Creek Road in Mardela Springs closed down last year after a storm. Part of the road was completely washed out after a privately owned dam was destroyed.

During a legislative session today, officials agreed to buy the $200,000 land that surrounds the road. The county's department of public works say they will not be replacing the dam, instead they will be placing pipes to prevent flooding as well as restoring the road.

"Right now we are talking to consultants to schedule a cost estimate to restore the road and also look in to another consultant to what do we do with the pond bottom , what's the best way to get the most bang for our buck," says Dallas Baker, Director of Public Works Wicomico County.

The Department of Public Works says it could take roughly 2 years to complete the project and reopen the road.
