DSP Aviation intercepts Milford man fleeing from police

Steven D. Martin, 31, of Milford, Del.

The Delaware State Police Aviation Unit arrested a Milford man near Bridgeville Monday afternoon after he crashed his car while fleeing police and ran into a field, officials said.

According to police, the Trooper 2 helicopter was flying in the area around Bridgeville to support a vehicle pursuit initiated by Milton Police. The fleeing suspect, identified as Steven D. Martin, 31, of Milford, was reportedly passing vehicles on the right shoulder of eastbound Seashore Highway when he struck a ditch and overturned the 2010 Toyota Corolla he was driving. The car overturned several times before striking a tree, officials said.

Police say Martin got out of the crashed Toyota and fled on foot through a wooded area and into an open field.

Spotting the suspect from the air, officials say the Aviation Unit pilot landed the helicopter in the field in front of Martin's path. The trooper medic quickly jumped out and apprehended Martin, with other crew members exiting the helicopter to assist in the arrest.

Martin was turned over to the Milton Police Department to face charges in relation to their initial pursuit. Delaware State Police additionally charged Martin with reckless driving, failure to have insurance in possession and passing on the right. He has been committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution on a secured bond of $350.
