Wicomico Board of Education revises school year calendar, names last day date

The Wicomico County Board of Education approved a revised school year calendar at a monthly meeting on Tuesday, naming June 14th as the last day for students this year, school board officials confirmed to 47 ABC.

Officials say the new date of June 14th was chosen to make up for three days this school year where school was canceled due to inclement weather: September 30th for flooding and January 9th and 10th as a result of snow and ice.

While the last day for teachers will be June 15th, all 10-month employees, such as nurses and instructional assistants, will end the year on the same day as students.

Students will additionally see early dismissal on each of the three days of their final week, June 12th through 14th.

Officials say the Board of Education approved changes to next year's school calendar as well, with high school commencement ceremonies scheduled one week earlier than they were previously. James M. Bennett High School's commencement will be held on Friday, June 1, 2018 and Mardela High, Parkside High and Wicomico High will all have commencement ceremonies on Saturday, June 2, 2018.
