Sussex County Sheriff’s Office warns of new phone scam

The Sussex County Sheriff's Office is warning citizens of a new phone scam that several people have reported either falling victim to or of being solicited to.

The scammers call residents claiming to be a Deputy with the Sheriff's Department, stating they have a warrant for the arrest of the person on the other end of the line for missed jury duty.  They then offer immunity if they are wired money.

"As of right now we have maybe several calls in the last few days, and we are trying to get this taken care of very quickly," said Sheriff Robert Lee.

In a news release, the Sheriff's Office says if you encounter a suspicious call do not panic, try to get the name and number from the person calling, do not wire money or give out personal information, hang up and call the agency in question to verify claims.

If you find the call to be bogus, report the suspected scam to your local law enforcement.

"Like I said, don't panic, it's a scam, contact your local law enforcement agency as soon as you get the call.  Whatever information these people tell give it to the police, and any phone number give that to them also so they can follow up on this as an investigation," said Lee.

For more information on this you can call the Sussex County sheriffs department at 302.855.7830.
