Pastor and an Islamic Society of Central Delaware member release open letter to citizens

This open letter to citizens in Delaware was written, when Muslim-Americans were targeted around the country and even recently in the Delaware Senate.

Two guests were invited to give the Senate invocation and a few members criticized prayer from the Quran.

In order to create peace among the diversity of cultures, Usman Sandhu, a member of the Islamic Society of Central Delaware decided to write this letter.

He partnered up with Pastor Sally Stewart of the Delaware Conference of United Methodist Church.

"There's a lot of misinformation about Muslims and what they are about and so forth, so we decided it was time to write a letter to help people understand that we don't have to be enemies," Stewart tells 47 ABC.

Despite having different religions, both friends had one common goal: to lift their voices to create unity.

Stewart says, "We talked about how Muslim folks and Christian folks can live together and we're not all that different. That both of our books have passages that can be pulled out and misused; when they look at it just at a face value it sounds like it's saying things that it may not be saying."

Beyond that, the letter was addressed to the Senate.

Sandhu suggest if the Senate keeps prayer before session, it should include all religions.

"If Senate makes a decision and their legislators make a decision that prayer is not necessary than we should completely take it out," Sandhu tells us.

Sandhu is also a proud member of the United Muslim-Americans of Delaware.

They recently organized a Unity Rally at Legislative Hall in Dove, all in effort to promote unity.

"With this letter and this rally what we're trying to do is we're trying to go forward and keep making friendships and keep making these bonds stronger and stronger," Sandhu states.

Sandhu and Stewart both tell us that they encourage everyone to go meet new people and to learn about other cultures, as we are all Americans, as they promote love and peace.
