Maryland pass new bill called Protecting Victims of Sex Trafficking Act of 2017

In Maryland, Governor Larry Hogan passed a new bill, that's part of the administration's Justice for Victims Initiative.

The Protecting Victims of Sex Trafficking Act of 2017 was signed April 18, 2017.

The bill further defines sexual abuse by including sex trafficking, regardless of whether the abuse was committed by a parent or any one else, who has supervision of a child.

This will allow authorities the ability to prosecute sex traffickers better.

We're told this will also bring to light a population of young people who are being victimized.

The Maryland Department of Human Resources tells 47 ABC, they will have the ability to respond and provide support for those victims, such as placement services or medical services.

They hope to provide victim support to prevent them from becoming victims again.

The bill was unanimously passed by both the House and Senate.
