Jury set to deliberate in Bethea’s case

Damon Bethea

Wednesday in Sussex County both the state and defense have rested in the case of Damon Bethea. The man who stands charged in a double homicide and home invasion in January of 2014.

On January 14 2014 the state alleges gunmen broke into a trailer on Harmons Hill Rd.  before robbing and killing William Hopkins and Cletis Nelson. Known heroin dealers.

According to the state  the three gunmen involved were Rhamir Whaples, Richard Robinson and Damon Bethea.

Bethea's defense team paints a different story. They claim not only was Bethea not one of the gunmen, he never made it into the house.

On the stand Bethea told the jury that the night of the murders he was in the car when his cousin Shamir Stratton handed out guns. Although one was handed to him  he says he never took it.

He testified he was in the car when Steven Kellam gave the order to quote take care of Hopkins and Nelson. Soon after that  he  said he got a bad feeling and decided to jump out of the car when Stratton slowed down.

He says he didn't meet up with them until Kellam picked him up hours later.

However earlier in the trial Robinson and Stratton testified Bethea was in the trailer and did pull the trigger.

Now with all the facts in hand the jury will have to decide who is telling the truth
