Harris Holds Contentious Town Hall

Republican Congressman Andy Harris held a town hall at Chesapeake College in Wye Mills, MD on Friday night.

Before the event began, the line was long and expectations were high.

Once it started the Congressman attempted to get through a power point, which was largely unsuccessful and fielded questions from constituents.

The town hall lasted about an hour and fifteen minutes and to help with the flow, Harris recruited a moderator.

It didn’t help, Harris was booed, mocked, laughed at, and screamed it for a majority of the town hall. Brief applause only followed after answers regarding the Chesapeake Bay and education.

Among the concerns from audience members were education, immigration, the environment and health care.

Afterward, many voiced frustration with the crowd, the process, and Harris. And some even rallied outside of the venue.

“I don't know if it achieved any purpose,” said Marcia Hall. “I didn't feel that congressman Harris, it really wasn't a give-and-take.”

“I was very happy to see Andy up there talking and dealing with the crowds,” said Timothy Kingston. “The crowd got rowdy at times but I was very impressed with Mr. Harris and he came off looking like a true professional and I'm proud to call him my congressman.”

“I'm disappointed because Andy Harris decided to go to his talking points instead of talking to us and addressing our issues,” said Stephen Gitau.

47 ABC did attempt to get an interview with the congressman but his staff declined.

Many in attendance say they have plans to attend other Harris events in the future to have their voices heard.
