Family works to continue loved one’s vision of re-opening Hurlock youth center

After a tragic loss, one Dorchester County  family is carrying out their loved one's vision.

"We just wanted to make sure we followed through with what he started," says Urshell Chase.

Chase is talking about her son's vision. Jerod Kimble kicked off efforts last year to re-open a youth center in Hurlock. Sadly, he never got to see the project through.

"This project was actually started by my nephew Jerod Kimble, who we lost in November in a car accident," says Melinda Turner, Jerod's aunt.

Last June,  47 ABC had the opportunity to speak with Jerod. He told us the center was shut down years ago because of funding issues, which he said didn't leave many options for kids in the area.

"I have kids myself right here in Hurlock. I see the struggle. I see them heading nowhere. We've got to give them an opportunity," says Jerod.

With heavy hearts, the family is picking-up where Jerod left off.

"Make sure that the things he wanted and fought so hard for and we could carry it through and his living wouldn't be in vain," says Chase.

Jerod's family admits it's not going to be easy. This building is in need of a lot of work. The inside  has missing ceiling tiles, a peeling floor, and chipped paint.

"We know it's going to be a lot because it's an older building, so we are waiting to hear back for a contractor to get an estimate," says Chase.

However,  the family says this building has potential. They just need funding  and volunteer support from the community, and they hope to carry out what Jerod had planned in each and everyone of the rooms.

"I know he wanted the studio up and running, he also wanted a computer room, somewhere where the kids could come and play pool, air hockey," says Turner.

"We're not going to stop we're going to keep pushing, we are going to be doing whatever fundraisers we need to do to make this happen ," says Chase.

On Saturday, April 22nd   the family will be hosting a fundraising event outside the building, which is located on 100 Broad Street, Hurlock, MD.

They will be hosting a yard and bake sale to raise funds for the building. The family will also be rallying volunteers to help clear out the building.
