Delaware set to revamp problem solving courts

Delaware is taking a major step to better the way it handles their problem solving courts.

Courts like drug court  that offer rehabilitation and education with prison sentences differed.

Over the next 36 months Delaware will use $300,000 grant to develop statewide core standard and policies for the court.

The grant is funded through the US Department of Justice.

The information generated should help develop baseline information to improve the functioning of these courts and provide a standard for other court systems to use in the future.

"I'm excited about this project, you know there's 17 other states in the United States that have moved toward statewide standards so it's wonderful that Delaware is getting in line with that and so we're expecting that these problem solving courts are going to have a significant impact on bettering our community," said Brenda Wise, statewide problem-solving court coordinator.

Officials add that problem solving courts will eventually become consolidated in Kent and Sussex Counties to help with the uniformity of the program.
