Activist on Muslim unity rally: “Our children will be confident. They will know, this is our land.”

Hundreds of Delawareans packed the east side of the Legislative Hall in Delaware on Wednesday all in support of the Muslim-American community with one common goal: unity.

"Unity is not possible when the color of someone's skin causes you to see them as less than human. Unity is not possible when you make a person's tradition synonymous with terrorism," Imam Abdulahadi told the crowd. "Unity is not possible when you justify or ignore violence towards another because of their gender, because of their orientation, because of their religion."

Hand in hand, a huge crowd stood with Muslim-Americans from the Delaware community a rally hosted by the United Muslim-Americans of Delaware to show solidarity on Wednesday at a time when Ali Abdul-Aleem says people can be divided.

America, Abdul-Aleem says, does not understand the true history behind the religion of Islam. He tells 47ABC, he thinks the perception is received only from what's shown on television.

"Since September 11, 2001, we've had so many pictures were people from middle eastern countries have been depicted as terrorists," he says.

It's a depiction District 13 Senator Dave McBride says is anything but the truth.

At the rally, he told the crowd Muslim-Americans who live, work and pray in his district represent the "best traditions" in the First State.

"Muslim-Americans have served as veterans, police, counter terrorism officers, teachers, doctors, attorneys, and entrepreneurs," says Senator McBride. "I'm proud to know them."

As for Iram Shaukat, a Bear resident and community activist, she says Wednesday was about teaching her children to own their identities.

"If we are setting examples with rallies like this, with coming out like this, with speeches like this…our children will be confident. They will know, this our land," says Shaukat. "We don't have to look at someone else to allow us for the liberties that everybody has been promised here."

At the end of his speech, Senator McBride also added he would be like to continue the dialogue of unity in the future.
