UPDATE: DSP investigating fatal Milford crash involving tractor trailer and motorcycle

The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit continues their investigation into a fatal crash involving a tractor trailer and motorcycle on Delaware Route 1 in Milford on Thursday.

At around 11:18 AM, police say the driver of a tractor trailer on northbound Route 1 was attempting to make a left turn across the southbound lanes into the parking lot of the I.G. Burton car dealership lot at 605 Bay Road.

Police say the tractor trailer began the left turn as a motorcycle was oncoming in the southbound lanes. The operator of the motorcycle reportedly tried to brake and lost control, hitting the trailer in the center of the roadway. Police say the truck continued nearly 20 feet farther before stopping.

The motorcycle operator was identified as 29-year-old David E. Thompson of Dover. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The truck diver is identified as 35-year-old Anthony L. Howard of Parkville, Md. Investigators say at this time there is no indication that drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash. Thompson was wearing a helmet and Howard was properly restrained, police said. Howard was uninjured in the incident.

Police closed southbound Route 1 at Thompsonville Road for around three and a half hours to clear and investigate the crash.

Officials say the investigation is ongoing and that anyone who witnessed the the crash is asked to call Master Corporal B. Killen at 302-698-8451.
