Mayor Day responds to Trump budget

Following President Trump's announced budget, Salisbury Mayor Jake Day had strong reaction to the cuts the city and the state will face.

Day says he was "deeply concerned" when he read through the different programs and grants that would be caught in the budget's crossfire.

The most prominent cuts would be environmental cuts.  Salisbury takes pride in its environmental standing nationwide, ranking ninth in air quality in the U.S.  Environmental cuts can also hamper clean-up with the Wicomico River.

Other items involved in the cuts could include the Police Department, block grants to help build community centers and revitalize old neighborhoods, disaster relief funds, and the USDA program.  Day says these cuts could prevent younger adults from making the transition from renting to home-ownership.

The mayor had strong comments for the federal government, mainly to invest in the people or get out of the peoples pockets.

"I would agree that we need to be careful about our federal budget, but then I'd say give that money back to us and our communities.  Don't tax us, federal government at that rate, and let us have that money to use it the way we know how we want to use it to revitalize our neighborhoods here.  Keep it in the pocketbooks of the men and women of Salisbury."
