IRSD referendum results see the biggest voter turnout ever

The Indian River School District Referendum passed with a pretty wide margin.

The interim superintendent Mark Steele says he was surprised that so many voters came out. But the overall feeling is that he is beyond happy that the referendum passed.

As he said at the press conference, he believes this is the most critical referendum in the history of the school district and they're acting as quickly as tomorrow to get things moving forward.

The referendum passed with 7,095 votes with 5,304 residents voting against it.

We're told this is the most voters they have ever received for a referendum vote with 12,489 voters.

The last time they saw this many voters was back in 2000, but this turnout surpassed those voting results by 4,000.

We're told people were waiting to vote, even before polls opened this morning.

The referendum means an average of a $93 increase in property taxes per household.

The money will go towards a variety of school expenses, such as text books and school safety.

We're told if the referendum did not pass, jobs would have been at risk, as there were potentially going to be 200 jobs cut.
