Fire Marshal: Two fires in one day caused by discarded smoking materials in Salisbury

Firefighters responded to two different fires in Salisbury on Saturday that were the result of smoking-related causes, according to the Maryland Office of the State Fire Marshal.

At 12:35 AM, firefighters from Parsonburg responded to a home in the 6700 block of Zion Church Road in Salisbury, officials said. It took 17 firefighters just over 50 minutes to control a fire that originated on the home's deck, reportedly starting from from the careless discard of smoking materials, fire marshals said. Fire marshals estimate the damages to the structure at around $5,000.

On Saturday afternoon at around 4:09, firefighters from Salisbury Station 16 were called to a home in the 28000 block of Log Cabin Road. Fire marshals say that smoking materials discarded outside near a door caused a fire that was controlled by 20 firefighters in approximately 15 minutes. Officials estimate damages to be about $5,000.

Fire marshals say no one was injured in either fire. Both were reportedly determined to be accidental.
