Denn looks to focus on Delaware criminal drug code

Attorney General Matt Dean is not seeing eye-to-eye with the committee commissioned to overhaul Delaware's criminal code.

Denn unveiled legislation Thursday aimed at making drug laws in the First State less complicated and more fair.  The proposal includes increasing penalties on repeat convictions for drug dealing.

He says the revision will result in a more straight-forward and coherent criminal drug code and help ensure fairer and proportional sentences.

State Senator Harris McDowell, chair of the Criminal Justice Improvement Committee, said while reforming the state's confusing drug laws is important, lawmakers should take a look at Delaware's criminal code in general.

Chief Justice of Delaware's Supreme Court Leo Strine, Jr. has also been an advocate for a more comprehensive rewrite of the entire criminal code.
