Delaware town plans to ban smoking on public beach
South Bethany is considering a ban on smoking at its public beach.
South Bethany's Mayor, Pat Volveris, tells 47 ABC the ban proposes a year-round enforcement with no designated smoking areas.
A second reading on the ordinance will take place Friday.
And a total of three readings must be done before the council votes on the new law.
If passed – South Bethany would be one of the last beaches in Delaware to ban smoking.
Volveris says the beach aims to be family oriented and an overwhelming majority of the town's residents are in favor of the ban.
“It's health and it’s the environment – you know cleaner air. And healthier people. You know second hand smoke is an issue,” Volveris said.
“So in line with that family atmosphere, the no smoking really goes hand in hand.”
Mayor Volveris says she is confident the ordinance will pass in time for the start of this year's beach season.
