Community honors local cancer victim by participating in race

Sunday morning, residents throughout Delmarva laced up their sneakers and hit the streets running. This was part of the Tim Kennard River Run in Salisbury  that honors the life of a local resident.

"Anyone that has any experience knowing Tim Kennard, he was a hoot, he made everyone laugh, he had such a love of life," says Linda Mills, a friend of Kennard and Co-Director of the race.

Mills tells us Kennard died in 2004 after a battle against kidney cancer.

Harlan Eagle,  a friend of Kennard, tells us he was an avid runner. So when Eagle heard about Kennard's diagnosis, he helped start this race in his honor.

"He said make it the best race in Salisbury and help the kids and animals," says Eagle.

Since then, they have held a family and pet friendly race that benefits Kennard's passions. We're told part of the money raised goes to Coalition of Caring,  a local organization that provides medical assistance to dogs and cats.

"Tim cared so much about people, and helping people, and loved our four legged friends. He was like a Dr. DoLittle to help the animals," says Eagle.

Organizers  tell us preparation leading up to this event can be a lot of work,  but seeing it come together makes it all worth it.

"We love being part of this," says Eagle.

Race organizers also tell us part of today's funds will go towards Coastal Hospice and Salisbury Horizon.
