Carney: New anti-discrimination policy is “one piece of the puzzle”

Governor John Carney has signed an executive order addressing discrimination in state agencies.

According to Governor Carney, the order was a recommendation from the Action Plan For Delaware report submitted by his transition team.

The executive order directs the state's Human Resources Department to develop a single non-discrimination process and complaint procedure. The purpose to create a consistent policy across all state agencies, according to Carney.

Wednesday's order was signed in Wilmington. It amends the current order previously signed by former Governor Jack Markell, which allows each agency to develop their own process.

"This executive order is a necessary step in the right direction, however we will know we have made progress when policy becomes practice."

Alicia Clark, an advisory consultant for the Interdominational Ministers Action Council ('IMAC'), has spoken to 47ABC in past reports regarding alleged discrimination in the workplace.

In a statement, Clark says "This executive order is a necessary step in the right direction; however, we will know we have made progress when policy becomes practice."

At the press conference, the governor added the new order is "just one piece of the puzzle" in a series of issues raised by the Delaware Department of Labor.
