ACLU of Delaware asks local police not to act as immigration deportation force

The ACLU of Delaware is calling on local police agencies to not act as President Donald Trump's immigration deportation force.

The group says they have sent a letter to local law enforcement throughout the state. In the letter, the group says  local police agencies are not obligated under federal law to participate in immigration enforcement.

Right now,  local enforcement is not required to report when they have undocumented immigrants in their custody, but with Trump's executive order,  local law enforcement could be given that additional task.

47 ABC reached out to the Georgetown Police Department who says they have not received the letter, but confirmed they have spoken to the ACLU about this matter.

The police department released this statement.

"The Georgetown Police Department has actively participated in discussions with Kathleen MacRae and other representatives of the ACLU of Delaware. The Georgetown Police Department does not participate in the 287 "g" program, nor, are any of our officers deputized as ICE officials. The Georgetown Police Department remains focused on the safety and well-being of all residents and visitors to our town." -Georgetown PD

The Executive Director of the ACLU tells 47 ABC they have not received feedback from local law enforcement since sending this letter on Tuesday.
