Worcester County’s Assateague State Park proposes new Campground Improvement Project

Maryland's only oceanfront state park will be doing some remodeling.

Assateague State Park in Worcester County has proposed a new Campground Improvement Project.

This project is all in an effort to add some sustainability to the facilities, as they hope to increase the park's strength against coastal storms.

They will be relocating some of the camp loops and camp sites towards the west, in order to protect the park's infrastructure.

The project will move five camp loop roads away from the primary dune and of the 26 eastern-most campsites, 18 will be relocated and eight will be eliminated.

Now hurricanes and tropical storms have affected the park, but the park manager tells us even the minor storms are affecting it as well.

The project will be scheduled for this fall, after camping season.

The 2018 season will be affected, so for all those who like to camp, make sure to check the new configuration of the campground.

If anyone has any thoughts about the project with any ideas or concerns, public comments can be submitted until Monday, as the Critical Area Commission will review this project.
