Thousands gather in Smyrna in memory of Lt. Steven Floyd

"He's absolutely a true Delaware hero, yes ma'am," exclaims Geoffrey Klopp.

Geoffrey Klopp is the president for the Correctional Officers Association of Delaware.

Klopp, along with a handful of other passionate community members, let their voices, their cries and their memories of Sergeant Floyd be heard for the thousands of Delawareans that attended tonight's candlelight vigil.

"I mean it's terrible that he's not with us but the way he left and the way he exemplified his life by saving those other officers lives is I guess as fitting a way to leave this world," says Klopp.

On Wednesday, a 19 hour hostage situation took place at the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center.

By the time police infiltrated the building where inmates held the officers hostage Thursday morning, Lieutenant Steven Floyd was found unresponsive and later pronounced dead.

His death hit home for many across the country and especially fellow law enforcement officers like Georgetown SCI Lieutenant Billy Edwards.

"I didn't know Lieutenant Floyd but I feel connected being as were all in the same department. I feel like he's a brother," explains Lt. Edwards.

And for Klopp, he just feels lucky to be able to tell all the members of the community that came out how special Floyd was.

He says, "You know, Steve was just an energy. I mean he was quiet but he was an energy and when he got a hold of something that he knew was the right thing to do he wouldn't stop until it was done, you know, and he didn't matter what the cost or price was."

This wasn't the only vigil held in memory of Lieutenant Floyd Friday evening, as people packed onto the Legislative Mall in Dover as well.

A GoFundMe page has also been set up to help support the Floyd's family as well as other victims. The campaign, which is trying to raise $30,000, was started by two correctional officers.

It's already raised over $5,000.

Klopp adds, "Correctional Officers Association of Delaware has a Facebook page. We also have a website. You can go to either one of those places. And the Go-Fund-me page for Steven Floyd, you can get to that from those places as well."
